Anil  > Travel > Navajo
"Today is a good day to die" - A Native American Indian greeting.

1800 miles by air, 900 miles by road and 40 miles by foot into the heart of Navajo Nation was simply a spectacular experience. Over 4 days, I had the opportunity to hike and photograph Antelope Canyon (over millions of years, running water has carved deep 'slots' into sandstone; sunlight filtering through the roof of the 'slots' create a brilliant display of color, light and shadow), Glen Canyon National Park, Lake Powell, Horseshoe Bend (a captivating meander in the Colorado river which can be viewed from a steep cliff, high above the river bend), Monument Valley (isolated red mesas and buttes surrounded by empty, sandy desert on the Colorado plateau), Painted Desert (multi-hued badlands of the Chinle formation rocks) and Meteor Crater (a 50,000 year-old meteorite impact site).

I do hope these pictures encourage you to follow my footsteps!

Anil > Glen Canyon Dam across the Colorado river creating Lake Powell.
Liked the way this picture turned out; the shadow balances the picture and overall composition.
Anil > Large 24-seat jet-boats look tiny from up on the cliff.
Anil > Horseshoe Bend - located few miles south of Page, AZ, on Colorado River downstream from Lake Powell and Glen Canyon Dam. It's tough to fathom scale in the picture, but the circumference you see here is 4 miles! The drop over the cliff (you see the edge at the bottom of the picture) is sheer and there is nothing to break your fall once over it!

Next few pictures were taken from different vantage points and time of day.
Anil > Hanging on for dear life with one hand and the camera in the other!
Anil > This was the most beautiful sunset I've seen in a long time. Wish I had a wider lens to do justice!
The next three pictures capture the pinks, reds, blue, purples as the sun sets.
Anil > Cloud streaks.
Anil > At sunset; notice red cloud-streaks reflecting off the river on the right half.
Was extremely windy; had to lie down at the edge of the cliff and swing my camera over to get this shot.
Anil > Last Sliver.
Anil > Lake Powell. Glen Canyon Bridge reflects on the Glen Canyon Dam
Had to precariously lean over the edge to get perfect symmetry between the arcs of the bridge and the dam, besides the window for this alignment at this time of the year was for 30 minutes early morning.
Anil > A lion's head? An elephant's trunk? A fanged snake? Down in Antelope Canyon looking up at the sky through a 'slot'.
The next few pictures taken in the upper and lower Antelope Canyons.
Anil > Harmony in sandstone swirls.
Anil > Five million years in the making. Colors are brightest during summer months when the sun shines straight through the 'slots' and to the canyon floor. What caught my attention was the sagebrush lodged in the crevice at the geometric and color confluence.
Anil > A ray of sunlight on the canyon wall.
Anil > If I gazed long enough I could discern different forms - like here - the profile of a man leaning (left half of the picture).. the curved back, the neck and the head!
Anil > Tight squeeze.
